"Will this machine and the existing probes work for small animal abdominal ultrasounds...or is another probe needed?"

While the phased array probe that comes with the machine certainly can be used for basic abdominal ultrasound (I do brief abdominal scans with them), for a more detailed evaluation of the abdomen, the user might want to invest in a linear probe. Both new and refurbished Chison probes can be purchased from Providian Medical Equipment.
